BEMIDJI, Minn. — Brian Mathews will summarize the most common employment laws a manager or supervisor will encounter in Minnesota during a noon Brown Bag Lunch program Wednesday, May 13, at the Bemidji State University Center for Research and Innovation.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a bag lunch for the one-hour session, which is open free to the public at the center’s off-campus facility at 3801 Bemidji Ave. North.
“In this presentation, I will describe realistic employee situations or questions and how a supervisor or manager should respond,” said Mathews, who is an independent human resource consultant in the Bemidji area. “Not filled with legalese or legal theory, this will be an ideal overview for every supervisor and manager who oversees other employees.”
The program will address such topics as allowed breaks and their length; post-termination paychecks; the handling of harassment complaints; the Family and Medical Leave Act; computation of overtime pay rates; what constitutes unlawful discrimination; and other frequently encountered subjects in employment law.
Presentation materials will include a printed handout and a list of available Internet resources for further study.
As a consultant, Mathews offers human resource assistance to small- and medium-sized businesses with a focus on developing practical solutions that fit the size and scope of the business. His background includes serving as a human resource manager with small and large organizations, including Fortune 500 companies, in Minnesota and the upper Midwest.
A graduate of the University of North Dakota with a bachelor’s degree in public administration, Mathews has been working in his current capacity for the past six months.
The Brown Bag program is part of free training and informational presentations offered by the CRI each month. A full schedule can be found at http://www.cri-bsu.org/BrownbagSeries.html.
