Talley Gallery to present works of Anne Mondro

BEMIDJI, Minn. — Anne Mondro, assistant professor of visual arts at the University of Michigan’s School of Art and Design in Ann Arbor, Mich., will present an exhibition entitled “Introspectional” in the Talley Gallery of the Education Arts Complex on the campus of Bemidji State University from Monday, Sept. 29 through Friday, Oct. 24.

Mondro creates mixed-media sculptures that reflect the emotional and physical pain associated with illness and disease. Anatomical forms of felt and wax depict a specific region of the body inflicted with disease. Referencing religious artifacts in form and function, her work identifies with the belief in the cathartic power of material objects to ease suffering.

“Intrigued with the physical and emotional complexity of the human body, my creative work uses images of the body to portray human needs and struggles in an attempt to inspire individual and societal empathy,” Mondro says.

Mondro joined the Michigan faculty in 2003 as a visiting assistant professor, and has been an assistant professor since 2005.

An opening reception for the show will be held on Monday, Sept. 29 from noon to 3 p.m.

Mondro’s exhibit will be open until 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, allowing Talley Gallery to participate in Bemidji’s First Friday event. On the first Friday of each month, the Bemidji arts community has open art exhibitions with people walking from gallery-to-gallery. Other open exhibitions for First Friday gallery viewings can be found at Bemidji Community Art Center, the Northern Gallery and Wild Hare. Parking behind the Education Arts building is free after 6 p.m.

Located in room 212 of the Education Arts building on the campus of Bemidji State University, the Talley Gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The gallery is barrier-free and is open at no charge to the public.
