Bemidji State University Symphonic Band presents free Nov. 24 concert

BEMIDJI, Minn. — The Bemidji State University Symphonic Band will present an evening of band music at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 24, in the Main Theatre of the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex. The concert is open to the public free of charge.

The Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Darrin Oehlerking, focuses on contemporary music in a concert band setting and is open to all BSU students regardless of their major, as well as community members. Many music majors enjoy performing on secondary instruments in this ensemble.

The program offers a wide variety of traditional wind band fare, including works by Bach, Ticheli, Reed, and Fucik.

Dr. Darrin Oehlerking
Oehlerking joined the BSU Department of Music this fall as director of bands. He is responsible for the direction and operations of the Wind Ensemble, Chamber Winds, Symphonic Band, Jazz I and the Instrumental Conducting Course. Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Oehlerking earned his DMA in wind conducting at the University of Iowa and his masters in music performance at the University of Manitoba. Prior to his appointment at BSU, he taught a wide variety of students and musicians at the primary, secondary and post-secondary levels. His post-secondary experience includes assignments at the University of Manitoba and Iowa Wesleyan College.
