Music department announces 2012 fall choir tour; Bemidji concert set for Oct. 30

BEMIDJI, Minn. (October 14, 2011) — Beginning Wednesday, Oct. 26, choir ensembles from the Department of Music at Bemidji State University will kick off a five-day Minnesota tour, culminating with an Oct. 30 home concert in Bemidji.

Under the direction of P. Bradley Logan, professor of music at Bemidji State University, the tour will include the Bemidji Choir, Chamber Singers, the Musikanten men’s chorus and Damenstimmen women’s chorus. The tour will include daytime concerts and workshops at local high schools and evening concerts that are open to the community.

Dates and locations for the community concerts on the tour are:
• Wednesday, Oct. 26: Staples/Motley High School Auditorium, Staples, Minn.; 7:30 p.m.
• Friday, Oct. 28: Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead, Minn.; 7:30 p.m.
• Saturday, Oct. 29: Evangelical Free Church, Thief River Falls, Minn.; 3 p.m.
• Sunday, Oct. 30: Thompson Recital Hall, Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex, Bemidji State University; 3 p.m.

The Oct. 26, 28 and 29 concerts are free of charge and open to the public; a free-will offering will be taken at these performances. For the Oct. 30 concert in Bemidji, tickets will be available for $5; senior citizens will be admitted for $3 and students enter free with a valid ID.

The high school concerts and workshops will be held at Brainerd (Minn.) High School, Underwood (N.D.) Public School, Fergus Falls (Minn.) High School and Fargo (N.D.) North High School.

The Bemidji Choir, under the direction of Logan, will perform eight pieces during the tour concerts, including “Canate Domino” by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, “Death Shall Not Destroy” by Robert Shaw and Alice Parker and “In Rememberance” by Eleanor Daley.

The Chamber Singers, also under the direction of Logan, will perform five pieces, including “All Creatures Now” by John Bennet, “Hard By a Crystal Fountain” by Thomas Morley and “Thoughts On The Moon” by Arden Skoglund.

Dammenstimmen, under the direction of student directors Amber Joel, a junior in music teacher certification from Badger, Minn., and Anna DeJong, a junior in music teacher certification from Coon Rapids, Minn., will perform two pieces: “Vier Lieder” by Brahms and “The Seal Lullaby” by Eric Whitacre.

Musikanten, under the direction of student directors Joe Colago, a sophomore in music teacher certification from Browns Valley, Minn., and Ron Lovelace, a senior in music teacher certification from St. Paul Park, Minn, will perform three pieces: “There Is Sweet Music” by Daniel Gawthrop, “Ave Maria” by Franz Biebl, and Eric Barnum’s “A Red, Red Rose.”
