Bemidji State University honors program students defend theses

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Jan. 7, 2011) — Two Bemidji State University students participating in the honors program successfully defended their theses during the Fall 2010 semester.

Some University students have the ability and desire to engage in academic challenges that extend beyond the liberal education requirements and their own majors. In the honors program, these students take interdisciplinary honors courses in lieu of liberal education offerings and engage in an honors thesis or project. As members of the honors community, they collaborate with a faculty advisor and the Honors Council to plan their studies and to manage the responsibilities that correspond with the program’s freedoms.

Rachel Goble, a senior in art from Aitkin, Minn., and Jamie Bogenschutz, a senior in psychology from Bemidji, successfully defended their honors program theses during the Fall 2010 semester.

Goble defended her creative thesis on Nov. 17, 2010, which featured a gallery exhibition of drawings and paintings based on the bond between humans and nature. Her exhibit featured four large paintings and eight smaller works showing human beings in natural settings and possessing certain aspects of natural phenomena, such as roots of a tree or the fire of the sun.

Bogenschutz presented her collection of short stories, “War Torn,” on Dec. 1, 2010. The stories were a collection of fictional stories related to lessons Bogenschutz learned about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse by observing family members and friends. The stories follow the experiences of Carter Anderson, a character based on a close friend, a soldier who reflects on a life of substance abuse after being wounded in combat.

The honors program does not offer a major, a minor, or a degree. Successful completion of the honors requirements is noted on students’ permanent transcripts, and graduates of the program are given special recognition at commencement and wear the honors stole with their academic robes.
