Master flutist Linda Chatterton to perform, give masterclass, at Bemidji State

BEMIDJI, Minn. (March 22, 2011) — Bemidji State University will host master flutist Linda Chatterton for a concert, presentation and masterclass during a two-day visit, Friday and Saturday, March 25-26.

On Friday the 25th, Chatterton will be joined by pianist Matthew McCright for a 7:30 p.m. recital at Bemidji State’s Thompson Recital Hall. Her program will feature works by four women composers, including an unaccompanied flute solo, “This Floating World,” written by Minneapolis-based freelance composer Edie Hill. Chatterton commissioned this solo and premiered the piece in 2004. The recital will also feature “Clan of the Lichens,” by Minnesota composer Abbie Bettinis.

The recital is open to the public free of charge.

On Saturday, Chatterton will offer a masterclass for high school flutists in Bangsberg 112 on the BSU campus. Three students will receive coaching from Chatterton and give a performance. The masterclass will begin at 1 p.m. and is open to the public free of charge.

At 3 p.m., Chatterton will present “It Sounded Better at Home!,” a motivational presentation based on her extensive work on the psychology of optimum performance. The presentation will be of interest to performers of all kinds – professional and amateur musicians, as well as any other actors, performers or public speakers. There is no charge for the presentation, which will be held in Bangsberg 112.

Chatterton’s visit to Bemidji is made possible by support from the Bemidji Area Arts Endowment and the Minnesota State Arts Board, which awarded Chatterton with its 2010 Arts Tour grant. The activities are also funded in part by the Minnesota arts and cultural heritage fund, as appropriate by the Minnesota legislature.

Chatterton, a Yamaha Performing Artist, received her bachelor’s degree from the Eastman School of Music and earned a master’s degree in music from the University of Minnesota. She has released four CDs, including a new album of contemporary American music for flute and piano.
