Tony Award-Winning "Proof" to Open Nov. 12

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Oct. 28, 2011) — “Proof,” the fall production for University Theatre, will open Nov. 12 at Bemidji State University.

The drama focuses on a young girl, Catherine, and her struggle with mathematical genius and mental illness after recently losing her father, Robert, also a mathematical genius. After Robert’s death, his ex-graduate student, Hal, discovers a paradigm-shifting proof about prime numbers.  The title of the play refers both to that proof and to the play’s central question: Can Catherine prove the proof’s authorship?

Throughout, the play explores Catherine’s fear of following in her father’s footsteps, both mathematically and mentally, and her desperate attempts to stay in control.

“Proof” was originally produced by the Manhattan Theatre Club in May, 2000, and went to Broadway in October that same year. The drama has received multiple Tony Award nominations along with winning the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for drama.

“Proof” will open Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. on the main stage of the Bemidji State Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex.  The play will also show Nov. 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $6 for non-BSU students and senior citizens and $12 for adults.  Bemidji State students admitted free with ID.
