BSU Sustainability Office Sponsoring New Community Initiative

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Jan. 12, 2012) — The Bemidji State University Sustainability Office is sponsoring “Sustainable Tuesdays.”

The Tuesday events will feature a variety of discussions and local voices, diverse perspectives, documentaries, and hands-on learning opportunities that connect the community.

“Sustainable Tuesdays” will be held every Tuesday in January from 6-8 p.m. at the Rail River Folk School in Bemidji.  The events are free and open to the public.

Jan. 17: Movie Night
Participants will enjoy popcorn and “Garbage!,” a documentary that examines the American waste-stream.  After the movie, attendees will share ideas and tips to reduce one’s garbage footprint at home.

Jan. 24: Café Night
Café Night will allow participants to talk with local resources about new ideas relating to different waste issues including building supplies, compost/organics, compost/burn barrel, and worm composting.  Local resources discussing these topics are Steve Strasser, Habitat Restore manager, Eric Pouilot, BSU student, Brandy Toft, Leech Lake Air Quality, and Josh Burnham, vermiculture entrepreneur.

Jan. 31: Waste Expert Panel
Local authorities will answer questions about what happens to waste after it moves out of Bemidji and Beltrami County.  Authorities include: Mike Albrecht, Waste Management office manager, Todd Anderson, City of Bemidji water & sewer superintendent, and Bill Patnaude, Beltrami County Environmental Services director.
