Emily Wendland exhibit extended at Talley Gallery

Emily Wendland, a senior in art at Bemidji State University, has been awarded the Eugene Dalzotto Purchase Award for the 2012-2013 academic school year.

Eugene Dalzotto, a former BSU art professor and chair of the visual arts department established a fund in 1992 to promote Bemidji State by honoring the exceptional work of art students. Each year a work of art by a senior student is nominated by art and design faculty to receive the Eugene Dalzotto Purchase Award; the piece selected will become part of the BSU teaching collections.

Wendland’s current senior exhibition for her bachelor’s degree in art, entitled “Transcendental Terrain,” is on display at the Talley Gallery. The exhibition opened Nov. 19 and has been extended until Feb. 2. A reception and award ceremony will be held Jan. 29 at 12 p.m. and the reception will continue until 3 p.m. All of these events are free and open to the public.

“My show is themed around nature, but kind of with a twist,” Wendland says. “The title is Transcendental Terrain and I got that from abstracted nature, it’s a lot of animals that are morphing into humans.”

The art exhibition features sculptural, ceramic, painted and illustrated works by Wendland.

Originally from Duluth, Wendland moved to Bemidji to attend Bemidji State. She says that living in Northern Minnesota has influenced the way she composes her art. Wendland describes her artwork as “quirky,” saying that she likes to be able to smile at her work.

“It’s nature, but then I add my sense of humor into it,” she said. “They’re a little weird. I like to make my stuff enjoyable.”

Located in room 212 of Bensen Hall on the Bemidji State University campus, the Talley Gallery is barrier-free and open at no charge to the public. All activities in the Talley Gallery are supported by the University’s Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee and Bemidji State University’s Department of Visual Arts.

Hours for the Talley Gallery are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
