BSU students will play with Bemidji Symphony

Nine Bemidji State University students will be performing with the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra during its March 3 concert, “Music and Peace.”

The 3 p.m. concert will be held at Bemidji High School. Admission is $20 for adults; $15 for senior citizens; and $10 for college students with a valid ID. Students in grades K-12 will be admitted free of charge.

The performance will feature the Native American flutist Keith Bear. Bear will join the BSO for “The Fable of the Old Turtle,” composed by Linda Tutas Haugen and based on the children’s book, “Old Turtle,” by Douglas Wood.

Bear is a world-renowned Mandan-Hidatsa storyteller and musician from the Three Affiliated Tribes in Fort Berthold, N.D. He has performed all across the United States as well as in cultural programs throughout Europe.

In addition to “The Fable of the Old Turtle,” the BSO will also be performing Gustav Holst’s “The Planets” and “Between Two Cultures,” a musical response to artwork by Wallowing Bull from the White Earth Band of Chippewa. Images of the art will be displayed during the performance.

The Bemidji Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Dr. Beverly Everett and is composed of community members and students alike.
