Visiting speaker: math perspective on climate change

As part of its lineup of activities celebrating March as Women’s History Month, the Bemidji State University Center for Professional Development, Liberal Education and Women’s Studies is hosting a March 27 presentation featuring climate scientist Samatha Oestreicher.

Her presentation, “Beyond Belief: A Mathematical Perspective on Climate Change,” will be held at 6 p.m. in Bridgeman Hall room 100 on the Bemidji State campus. It is free and open to the public.

Over the last few years, Oestreicher has presented on the mathematics of climate to general and scientific audiences across the country including Tufts University, Smith College, the annual meeting of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, Joint Mathematics Meetings, National Center for Atmospheric Research. She is on a mission to use her mathematics and scientific knowledge to improve our understanding of Earth’s past and present climates.

Oestreicher is an award-winning speaker, applied mathematics doctoral candidate at the University of Minnesota and research assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratories in the Climate, Ocean and Sea Ice Modeling group. She earned her undergraduate degree in theater from Smith College and maintains her commitment to accessible communication through presentations and writing. Her writing has most recently been featured on the Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013 blog.

The panel is sponsored by the Bemidji State University Women’s Studies/Gender Studies Council and is funded in part by a grant from the Northwest Minnesota Women’s Fund.
