Sustainable Tuesdays events announced for May

Sustainable Tuesdays, a weekly presentation on topics related to environmental and sustainability issues presented by Bemidji State University’s Sustainability Office, will focus on healthy food and sustainable healthcare during its May schedule.

Sustainable Tuesdays are held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Rail River Folk School, located at 303 Railroad St. SW in Bemidji. They are open free to the public unless otherwise noted.

May 14 – Healthy Living on a Budget
Eating healthy and shopping with an eco-friendly mindset doesn’t have to strain a budget. This Sustainable Tuesdays session will feature a variety of presentations on how to eat healthy on a budget. Participants will learn how to make the most of a shopping experience, plan healthy meals for the week, take advantage of free activities in the Bemidji area and more.

May 21 – Sustainable Healthcare
What can major healthcare systems learn from community support associations, cooperatives, collectives and other local sustainability movements? What does sustainable health look like to both patients and healthcare workers? Local practitioner Diane Pittman will lead a conversation about community-oriented medical practice, answering these questions and more. Participants are encouraged to share their visions for sustainable healthcare in the Bemidji community.

May 28 – Help Plant the “We Digg It!” Garden
Join the Rail River Folk School for a seedling planting session at the school’s “We Digg It!” community and learning garden. Participants will help plant the garden, and this session will also provide a good introduction to gardening for people seeking more information about starting their own garden.

Sustainable Tuesdays are a partnership between Bemidji State’s Sustainability Office, the Indigenous Environmental Network, Minnesota GreenCorps and the Rail River Folk School. The Sustainable Tuesdays presentations aim to draw upon the strengths of the region’s diversity to create a sustainable Bemidji.
