Visiting lecturer to discuss democracy, leadership

Dr. Eric Weber, associate professor of public policy leadership at the University of Mississippi, will discuss democracy and leadership during a Sept. 20 lecture at Bemidji State University.

The lecture, this year’s Don and Gladys McDonald Philosophy Lecture Series presentation, will be held in Hagg-Sauer Hall 100 at 7 p.m. It is open to the public at no charge.

The lecture, titled “Democracy and Leadership,” is based on Weber’s forthcoming book, “Democracy and Leadership: On Pragmatism and Value.” It will address the issue of developing concepts of leadership in a democratic society, a task that Weber says requires abandoning the idea that leadership is connected to a special person or class of persons.

Weber’s presentation is sponsored by the Don and Gladys McDonald Philosophy Lecture Series in Applied Ethics and the College of Arts and Sciences. It is the first in a continuing series of lectures on leadership in an effort to promote the leadership program being developed at the university.

Weber is an associate professor of public policy leadership at the University of Mississippi, where he has taught since 2007. He has published three books and is a regular columnist for The Clarion Ledger newspaper in Jackson, Miss. Weber has a doctorate in philosophy from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He has bachelor’s degrees in philosophy and communication studies from Vanderbilt and a master’s degree in philosophy from Ohio University.
