Colleen Greer named College of Arts and Sciences dean

Dr. Martin Tadlock, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Bemidji State University, announced that Dr. Colleen Greer has been named dean of the university’s College of Arts and Sciences.

Greer-Colleen-Web-2014“I am extremely pleased to have been selected as the Dean of the College of Arts and Science here at Bemidji State University,” Greer said. “We have had a chance during my two-year term as interim dean in the college, to engage new ideas and plans for the future. I look forward to working with the faculty, staff and administration toward the fruition of these plans, and I see many possibilities for growth as we move forward.”

Greer had served as interim dean of the college for the last two years. As dean, Greer provides leadership for 14 academic programs and approximately 110 faculty and staff. She will oversee all budgets in the college and facilitate the college’s academic planning. As interim dean she led a university-wide effort to develop a leadership program, facilitated the development of a Water Institute and assisted with the development of programming in the medical sciences.

“Colleen’s commitment to Bemidji State University is unwavering and she is a strong advocate for the College of Arts and Sciences,” Tadlock said. “Her beliefs and values are aligned with the beliefs and values found in BSU’s Master Academic Plan and university strategic plan; those beliefs and values inform our thinking, actions and decisions. She is the right person at the right time for this position, and she has my full support to serve the students, staff, and faculty in the college and across the university.”

In addition to her role as interim dean, Greer served as director of women’s studies and gender studies at BSU from 2010-12, was coordinator of BSU’s sociology program, and served as chair of BSU’s Liberal Education Task Force from 2005-08. She chaired BSU’s social relations and services department from 2002-08.

She is a full professor with experience in curriculum development, strategic planning, faculty mentoring, student advising, accreditation and collective bargaining agreements.

Greer earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology at Kearney State College and has master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology from the University of Kansas.
