Nov. 8 flute performance opens faculty recital season

Bemidji State University flute instructor Susan Nelson will perform a faculty recital on Nov. 8 in the Thompson Recital Hall of the university’s Bangsburg Fine Arts Complex. The recital will begin at 3 p.m. and is open free to the public.

Since moving to Bemidji in 1987, Nelson has been an instructor of music in programs for the Region 2 Arts Council, the Five Wings Arts Council and the Bemidji State University MusiCamp. She has also performed in faculty chamber recitals with the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra.

She is the author of several journal and encyclopedia articles on flutists and historical woodwind recordings. Her book, The Flute on Record–the 78 rpm Era, was published by Scarecrow Press in 2006.

Nelson will perform 19th and 20th century French compositions including Francis Poulenc’s “Sonata for flute and piano” and “Deux Interludes” by Jacques Ibert. She will be accompanied by pianist Eric Gustafson and violinist Eric Olson. Olson is also a music theory instructor at Bemidji State.
