BSU hosts Nov. 8 sessions on problem gambling awareness

EMIDJI, Minn. — Bemidji State University will host two problem gambling awareness programs co-sponsored by the Bemidji Interagency Training Exchange and Northstar Problem Gambling Alliance on Thursday, Nov. 8, in two identical sessions entitled “Problem Gambling: What You Need to Know and Need to Do,” from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m.

The sessions are being produced by the Northstar Problem Gambling Alliance and funded in part by the State of Minnesota. Roger Svendsen, executive director of the NPGA, will present interactive workshops which will introduce participants to gambling behavior and problem and pathological gambling.

The discussion topics in the workshops will include:
• an overview of gambling in Minnesota and in the United States
• Gambling: Recreation with Risk
• guidelines for whether, when and how much to gamble
• different types of gamblers
• warning signs for gambling problems
• similarities and differences between pathological gambling and chemical dependency
• gambling amongst youth
• intervention processes for persons who may have gambling problems
• overview of resources for dealing with problem or pathological gambling

Registration for the sessions are $5 for individuals or $25 for five or more peole from the same office or agency. The registration fee includes refreshments which will be served during a break in the session.
