Lawrence to deliver Sept. 17 Honors Council Lecture

Dr. Mark Lawrence, professor of geography at Bemidji State University, will deliver an Honors Council Lecture on natural resource management in Kenya on Sept. 17.

Lawrence’s presentation, “The Bamboo of Kilui and the Figs of Kwa Muthita: Natural Resource Management in Liminal Landscapes,” will be held at 7 p.m. in Hagg Sauer 112 on the Bemidji State campus. Honors Council Lectures are open to the public free of charge.

The lecture will examine the natural resource management in liminal landscapes and the relationship between the Akamba culture in Kenya and the “political ecology of capitalist industrialization of agriculture” within the country.

Lawrence teaches geography at Bemidji State. He has assisted community-planning efforts of environmental scientists and has worked with the Foundation Agency for Rural Development of Kenya.

The Honors Council Lecture Series is hosted by the Bemidji State University Honors Council. The council is the advisory group to the honors program comprised of 12 faculty members from each of the University’s colleges. Student representatives also are elected to the council by their cohorts for one-year terms.
