BEMIDJI, Minn. (March 5, 2010) — Upcoming events sponsored by the Bemidji State University Center for Research and Innovation include an Academy of Lifelong Learning lecture on the history of western Canada and an introduction to the increasingly popular sport of geocaching.
All events are held at the Center for Research and Innovation, 3801 Bemidji Ave. N., Bemidji, unless otherwise noted.
Academy of Lifelong Learning lecture: “Regional Canadian History, the Hudson Bay Company, Louis Riel and the Metis.”
Presenter: Tom Beech, associate professor of political science, Bemidji State University.
Tom Beech will lecture on the Hudson Bay Company and its role in the development of western Canada. He will also discuss the impact of European settlement on the Metis and Red rivers and on the Northwest Rebellions. Beech is a graduate of the University of Manitoba and holds a doctorate Penn State. He has been a member of Bemidji State’s political science department since 1999.

Brown Bag Luncheon: “Geocaching: A Modern-Day Treasure Hunt!”
Presenter: John Fylpaa, naturalist, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources
With nearly 200 caches within 15 miles of Bemidji and thousands in the state, “cachers” have found a new way to enjoy the outdoors. Join Department of Natural Resources naturalist John Fylpaa to find out how you can give this increasingly popular sport a try for free.
