Sustainable Tuesdays events scheduled for late January

Sustainable Tuesdays, a weekly presentation on topics related to environmental and sustainability issues presented by Bemidji State University’s Sustainability Office, has upcoming presentations on snow-snake carving and native foods.

Sustainable Tuesdays are held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Rail River Folk School, located at 303 Railroad St. SW in Bemidji. They are open free to the public unless otherwise noted.

January 22 – Snow Snake Carving Workshop
Bob Shimek, a Red Lake elder from White Earth, will share the Ojibwe snow snake tradition and teach participants how to carve their own snakes. Participants will craft a snow snake that can be used in an upcoming snow snake competition in March.

January 29 – Native Foods Cooking Class with Black Sheep Chefs
Black Sheep Chefs, a local catering company that specializes in Native American foods, works to revive the lost food culture of the region through a modern interpretation of the knowledge of indigenous plants and animals. Sean Sherman of the Black Sheep Chefs hosts this native foods cooking class and shares his philosophy on native cooking.

Participation in the native foods cooking class is limited to 15, and advance registration is required. This course will be held at the Harmony Co-op Community Kitchen and carries a $20 registration fee. To register, contact Caitlyn Schuchhardt in the BSU Sustainability Office, (218) 755-3765, cschuchhardt@bemidjistate.edu.

Sustainable Tuesdays are a partnership between Bemidji State’s Sustainability Office, the Indigenous Environmental Network, Minnesota GreenCorps and the Rail River Folk School. The Sustainable Tuesdays presentations aim to draw upon the strengths of the region’s diversity to create a sustainable Bemidji.
