Sustainable Tuesdays schedule for September

Sustainable Tuesdays are weekly presentation on topics related to environmental and sustainability issues. They are presented by Bemidji State University’s Sustainability Office and will feature a permaculture series, honey harvesting, beekeeping and edible plants.

Sustainable Tuesdays are held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Rail River Folk School, located at 303 Railroad St. SW in Bemidji. They are open free to the public unless otherwise noted.

Sept. 3: Permaculture Series: Fruits of the Food Forest – Gathering and Gleaning the Native Fruits of September
Learn what a food forest is and go over trees, shrubs, and understory plants that grow well in our area. Learn how you can site food forests and start planning for food forest plants. Meet at the Rail River Folk School.

Sept. 10: Honey Harvesting
At this Tuesday event, local beekeeper Perry Eddy will display how to harvest honey from the hives at the Rail River Folk School. One will discover the process of opening the hive, removing the bees, uncapping the honeycomb, then extracting and bottling the honey. Be prepared to get sticky! For those that would like to bring a sample home, bring your own small jar and free will donation, if able.

Sept. 17: Top Bar Beekeeping
Andy Hayner is a graduate of the sustainable food production program at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Fergus Falls. He has practiced and taught natural beekeeping methods for three years. He will lead a discussion about these methods, featuring the top bar beehive.

Sept. 24: Eating in the Forest – Edible Plants and Mushroom Walk
This event will focus on eating things that grow in the woods. Joe Knutson will be taking participants out into the forest to help identify and discuss edible plants and mushrooms. The group will meet at the Rail River Folk School.
