Sustainable Tuesdays, a weekly presentation on topics related to environmental and sustainability issues presented by the Bemidji State University Sustainability Office, will feature an exploration of Certified Wildlife Habitats and a hands-on weaving workshop to open its schedule for November.

HashTag-SustainableTuesdaysMost Sustainable Tuesdays events are held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Rail River Folk School, located at 303 Railroad St. SW in Bemidji. They are open free to the public unless otherwise noted.

Nov. 5 – Permaculture series: ‘Weaving a Landscape for Community and Wildlife at Rail River Folk School’
Diana Kuklinski and Megan Arndt will guide participants through the process for creating Certified Wildlife Habitats and how those habitats help integrate the common needs of humans and wildlife. The Rail River Folk School’s living laboratory will be used to show participants how to evaluate and examine sun, soil, water and wind conditions and use those insights to plan and install food and fiber landscapes.

Participants can learn how to become part of the Rail River Folk School’s permaculture design process and work on designs for natural landscaping in several areas at the school.

Nov. 12 – ‘From Fiber to Loom: A Spinning and Weaving Workshop at Two Eyes Weaver Studio’
The session will provide an introduction to the services available at Kirstin Majkrzak’s Two Eyes Weaver studio, which soon will begin offering weaving classes and allowing prospective weavers to rent studio time. The session will be held at the studio, which is located in the Lakeside Center building at 505 Bemidji Ave.

Participants will take part in a hands-on experience and learn how natural fibers are spun into yarn and can then be woven into cloth. Over the course of the session, participants will take turns weaving a wall hanging that will be installed at the Rail River Folk School. Participants are encouraged to bring their own yarn, roving, sticks, feathers or other natural fibers to add to the design.

Sustainable Tuesdays are a partnership between Bemidji State’s Sustainability Office, the Indigenous Environmental Network, Minnesota GreenCorps and the Rail River Folk School. The Sustainable Tuesdays presentations aim to draw upon the strengths of the region’s diversity to create a sustainable Bemidji.
