College of Arts and Sciences
** On Jan. 2, the college announced the creation of the Department of Humanities, which houses the philosophy, history & art history and theater & communication arts programs. The Department of Humanities will also oversee the humanities program. The Department of Humanities is chaired by Dr. J. Thomas Murphy.
** Dr. Michael C. Morgan, professor of English, has a published a chapter in the newly-released book "Wiki Writing: Collaborative Learning in the College Classroom." His chapter on best practices in writing on a wiki, "Above and Below the Double Line: Refactoring and that Old-Time Revision," draws on his work in the classroom with Bemidji State students and discusses how students collectively refactor their writing from an informal discussion into a structured, multi-authored, linked document. Morgan has been teaching with wikis since 2002. The book is available for purchase at amazon.com.
College of Business, Technology and Communication
** Dr. Louis Mengelkoch was named chair of the Department of Mass Communication through summer 2011.
College of Health Sciences and Human Ecology
** Dr. Charles E. Alberti, professor emeritus of professional education and honors, has been invited to join an interdisciplinary group of approximately 40 scholars at Pembroke College in the University of Oxford, Oxford, England to explore the nature of terrorism. The symposium will take place from March 29-April 3, 2009.
** Dr. Dan Gartrell and Dr. Kathleen Sonsteng from the Department of Professional Education co-authored an article in the November issue of "Young Children," the journal of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, titled "Nurturing Mastery Motivation: No Need for Rewards." Also co-authoring the article was June Reineke from Winona State University.
** Steve Sertich, head women's ice hockey coach, was pictured on the cover of the January edition of "International Journal of Sport Management."
** Dr. Kathleen Sonsteng, Department of Professional Education, presented two conference sessions at "Listening and Talking for Family Health: 27th Weekend Workshop for Parents," held Nov. 22 in Bemidji. Her presentation was titled "That's A Family!"
** Margie Giauque, director of career services, will be serving her second term as a senator for the American Association of Education for Employment in Education (AAEE). She will also be working on the Leadership Development Committee of this association. She has been a member of AAEE since 1985.

** Tammi Bertelson named adjunct faculty in the Center for Extended Learning, effective Jan. 1, 2009.
** Marc Bloomquist named adjunct faculty in criminal justice, effective Jan. 12, 2009.
** Cheryl Christlieb named accounting clerk-intermittent in the accounting services office, effective Jan. 12, 2008.
