Northwest Technical College

  • The Northwest Technical College (NTC) Bemidji campus, the first college from where the mighty Mississippi begins its 2,552-mile journey to New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico, shares qualities with that neighboring river in that both reach a diverse population and shape the livelihoods of thousands.
  • The Bemidji area quality of life draws learners to NTC, prompting the continued growth and vitality of both. The city is historically charming, progressive, beautiful and offers a unique blend of American Indian culture and north woods folklore. The area is rich with outdoor recreational opportunities while also providing a wealth of cultural, culinary and shopping amenities.
  • Bemidji derived its name from "Chief Bemidji" who was the first permanent settler of Bemidji. His name came from the lake which means "lake with cross waters". The lake was so named by the Indians since the Mississippi River passed through the lake. Today, Bemidji is referred to as the first city on the Mississippi.
  • About 12,000 people reside in the city limits of Bemidji which is a regional retail, education and service center. The community is home to three higher education institutions. There are 1000+ learners who attend NTC, 4,600 at Bemidji State University (BSU), and 170 learners at Oak Hills Christian College.
  • Bemidji is home to the famous statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox which reside on the shore of Lake Bemidji. Paul and Babe are the second most photographed statues in the United States next to Mount Rushmore.
  • Bemidji sits within a 25 mile radius of 400 fishing lakes which offers an array of recreational year round activities. Traditional American Indian culture and history are part of Bemidji's culture.
