Strategy B:  Develop and Reinforce the Meaning/Relevance/Power of the Liberal Arts

As a university, Bemidji State recognizes the importance of acknowledging (to the community) and teaching (to our students) fundamental relevance of the liberal arts.

Goals & Initiatives

  1. Infuse the AAC&U’s essential learning outcomes and high impact practices in the BSU’s general education program.

Initiatives:

  • Ask the Liberal Education Committee to identify a model by October 15, 2013.

  • Share the model with the broader university by November 1, 2013 with feedback by December 15, 2013.

  1. Establish additional graduation requirements that support the MAP.

Initiatives:

  • Student experience with the signature themes

  • a non-English (natural or programming) language requirement that can be met in a variety of ways such as, proficiency in a non-English language acquired in high school, successful completion of study of a year or more of a non-English language.

  1. Create a freshman seminar and a senior seminar (capstone) that infuse “problem solving” models to promote integrative and interdisciplinary thinking.

Initiative:

  • Form a faculty group to identify models for implementation

  1. Provide faculty and staff enrichment opportunities focused on enhancing pedagogy.

Initiatives:

  • High impact practices in teaching

  • The nature of the brain, cognition, and meta-cognition

  • Collaborative teaching

  • Course design and assessment

  • Problem solving, integrative and interdisciplinary thinking

  • Working with diverse populations

Under create a Freshman Seminar course this is an ared that needs more discussion. If this means that FYE will go away to make room for this new course called University Inquiry or whatever, I do not agree. We need to keep FYE here, I believe it aids in acclimated students to our campus and services and helps with retention. rnrnIf a new course is added I think it should be a the beginning of their Sophomore year or second year for transfer students and be major specific and include the pieces on critical thinking, global awareness, creating a career plan, and other things to help students hone their soft skills that employers say they lack. rnrnI would be willing to serve on this committee to explore this.
