Important Notes for International Students

*All international students who were in the U.S. at any time in 2008 are required to file Form 8843 with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. If you earned income in 2008 or received a scholarship, you may also need to file a tax return.

*All International students are required to file a form 8843 with the U.S. Internal Revenue Services every year by April 15. International students who worked in 2008 may need or want to also file a tax return 1040NR. Regular U.S. citizens can file their tax form 1040 on-line, but a form 1040 does not satisfy an international student's obligation. The form 1040NR that is required for international students cannot be e-filed on-line.

Be aware that your tax obligations are different from citizens and depend on whether your home country has a treaty with the U.S. and the conditions of that treaty.

Free information/help sessions are available on campus in Decker Hall, Room 14, on Wednesday and Thursdays, 4 - 7 p.m. Assistants will help prepare your 1040NR and give you instructions on how to send in the forms. Depending on the amount of your earnings and your country's treaty, you may get money back by filing your 1040NR.

U.S. Dept of Homeland Security may communicate with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service when you leave the U.S. or wish to re-enter to determine whether you have satisfied your tax obligations. Please attend these informational sessions to learn how to satisfy your tax obligations.
