The South Africa summer is hot and dry. Maximum temperatures can reach 90 degrees Fahrenheit and higher. Hats and high sunscreen-factor creams are a must, as are sensible walking shoes and a daypack. Prospective attendees should note that they require a physical fitness level that enables them to hike in steep terrain for a sustained period of up to six hours carrying a daypack, without discomfort. This is not negotiable, but does not disqualify any handicapped students provided they can meet the requirement and have documentation from a physician certifying that they are in compliance.
Once in South Africa, you will travel by air-conditioned bus, thus allowing for more flexibility and reduced travel times.
ACADEMIC PROGRAM
The program is offered for six semester credits. There are several different courses for which you may receive credit for Semester Break in South Africa.
Academic requirements include:
- Daily Journal: list important events and activities of your day and emphasize items that contributed to your learning experience, especially with regard to your understanding of global economy.
- Pre-trip Classes: lectures at UWC, field trips, tours and a post-trip test.

- Apartheid and Present Day Politics in South Africa
