Study Abroad

Study Abroad . . . Where do I begin?

Finding the right program can be a little overwhelming! With so many options you might wonder how you will ever choose. Consider the following when looking for a study abroad program:

What programs does BSU offer?

Often utilizing the study abroad programs from your own university can be more convenient and less costly because  you will usually pay your regular tuition and fees. Check out our University Sponsored Programs to see if one fulfills your educational and travel goals. If not, then move onto looking at our Exchange Programs, and programs offered from other universities and agencies.

Where do I want to study? In what language do I want to study? What subjects do I want to focus on?

If you have a specific country you want to visit, visit our Programs by Country page to see available programs. Also visit studyabroad.com or go abroad.com, both offer program searches by country, language, and subject. Also don't rule out a country solely because the native language is not English. Some countries offer classes taught in English.

How much do I want to spend?

The cost of study abroad programs can vary greatly so shop around. Don't forget to consider extra expenses such as housing, food, insurance, transportation, etc. One program may appear less costly than another, though it may not be once you factor in  additional expenses. Try comparing the cost to what you would have spent at home on food, rent, bills, transportation, etc. The costs of studying abroad won't seem as overwhelming when you compare the costs to what you would normally spend at home.

When do I want to go?

Are you looking to study abroad for the summer, a semester, or a year? Do you want to leave in the spring or fall? Don't forget, fall semester here is spring in the Southern hemisphere.

Do I need credits towards graduation?

Are you studying abroad to gain credits toward graduation or because you are looking for an extended stay abroad? If you don't need academic credits, you may want to consider working, volunteering, interning or teaching abroad.

Considerations Before You Go

  • Talk to your advisor about degree requirements and which classes will county toward graduation.
  • Read up on the history and culture of your future host country. You will experience culture shock, but having some knowledge of the country beforehand will lessen the effects.
  • Research health and safety information. Some countries require inoculations such as Hepatitis A, that require multiple vaccinations.
  • Apply for scholarships available for study abroad, especially in Asia and other "non-traditional" locations. However, it may take a lot of research and some have early deadline. Check to see if on-campus scholarships can be used toward study abroad.
