Academic Difficulties

Students may experience difficulties with the course expectations and/or the academic demands of their college curriculum. There are some steps you can take to persist and improve performance:

See Your Instructor

  • Introduce yourself (if your instructor does not know your name) and tell him/her which class you are in.
  • Remember why you are talking with your instructor--to get assistance. Explain to your instructor why you made the appointment and be willing to listen and to learn.
  • Have problems or questions written out before the appointment and ask specific questions.
  • Bring your class notes with you and explain how you have been studying.
  • Don't leave confused. Ask your instructor for further explanation if you do not understand.

Talk to Your Advisor

  • Your advisor may be helpful in identifying additional options for improving your academic performance.
  • Your advisor may also refer you to additional campus resources.

Become Involved in a Study Group

  • Arrange to study with others in the class. (Choose your study partners wisely.)
  • If you don't know your classmates well enough, ask the instructor for suggestions on getting a study group together.

Seek Tutorial Assistance

  • Limited tutoring in select subjects is available for TRIO/SSS students in Sanford Hall.
  • Academic departments may have tutoring, help or study groups. Ask your instructor.
  • Additional services are available through the Writing Resource Center, Math Help Room, Oral Communications Lab, and Peer Academic Assistance. See previous page regarding academic support.
