Credit Load and Repeating Courses

Credit Load

To be a full-time student during a semester, you must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits, although the average load is 16 credits per semester to complete degree requirements in four years. This usually means that you will be enrolled in 5-7 classes per semester. (New students or students with a GPA less than 3.0 may not enroll in more than 18 credits in a semester without advisor approval.)

Note:

  • Enrolling in less than 12 credits per semester will affect your eligibility for financial aid, health insurance, and on-campus employment.
  • Full-time status for recipients of Minnesota State Grant funds is a minimum of 15 credits per semester to receive the maximum for which you are eligible.
  • International students must be full-time each semester to maintain their student visa status.

Class time plus study time for a full-time student can add up to, or exceed, the equivalent of a full-time job. You should plan on a minimum of two hours for study/preparation/research for every hour of class time a a week.
