* 22% of BSU students choose not to drink.

* 46% of BSU students choose moderation (less than 5 drinks in one sitting)

* 88% of BSU students choose not to use marijuana on a regular basis (i.e. more than once a month).

* 90% of BSU students choose not to use other illegal drugs.

* 83% of BSU students indicate they prefer not to have drugs available at parties.

*27% of BSU students indicate they prefer not to have alcohol present at parties.

BSU students who drink report the following:


* 56% reported engaging in some form of public misconduct such as trouble with the police, fighting/argument, DWI/DUI, or taking sexual advantage of someone.

* 19% reported some kind of personal injury such as being hurt or injured, being taken advantage of sexually, or a suicide attempt.

* 85% of all rape involves the use of alcohol.

* 85% of all campus misconduct or crime involves the use of alcohol.

* Every year several students who died of alcohol poisoning from over consumption are reported in the national news.

* Universities are increasingly involved in alcohol and drug abuse prevention and education.

*The legal drinking age in Minnesota is 21.  Underage drinking is a violation of state law and University policy.  BSU is a DRY campus.  Possession or use of alcohol on campus is a violation of BSU and Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Policy.


On Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD's) and AIDS

* In 1999, 78,210 AIDS cases were reported from people engaging in heterosexual sex.

* Genital warts, Chlamydia and herpes are the most prevalent STD.

* Abstinence is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy and STD’s.

* Condoms are 85-95% effective in preventing pregnancy and STD’s.

* Although most students know the importance of condoms, over 60% indicate having unprotected sex.


On Harassment

* Nationally there is an increase of harassment reports being filed with the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission.

* 95% of gays and lesbians report at least one incident of verbal or physical attack within the past year because of their perceived sexual orientation.  Hate crimes against gays, lesbians, bisexuals or transgender are the fastest growing of the hate crimes.

* People of minority groups continue to report regular experiences that indicate negative biases toward them that diminish the quality of the environment (being pulled over more often if they have tribal license plates, being followed in stores, being feared or disliked for being a minority).

* Minnesota has a bias crime law that allows for stronger penalties for bias motivated crime.

* Harassment on the basis of sex, race, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, marital status or with regards to public assistance is a violation of state law, MNSCU policy and BSU policy.

On Consent

* Law and policy define consent as current voluntary assent or approval to what is being proposed or suggested by another.

* Consent is considered invalid if another person is intoxicated or mentally incapable of giving consent.

* Consent is considered invalid if there is any form of threat, coercion, intimidation or power used.

* Anyone under the age of 16 is considered unable to give consent.

* 51% of BSU women and 18% of BSU men reported engaging in unwanted sex play due to verbal or physical coercion. (Hanus 1999)

* 12% of both BSU men and women indicated having being taken advantage of sexually in the previous year. (Hanus 1999)

* 80-85% of all sexual assaults nationally are committed by an acquaintance.


On Diversity

* BSU has over 4,800 students studying in 60 different academic programs.

* BSU students represent over 38 countries and cultures.

* Native Americans represent 24% of the citizens in Beltrami County.

* Nearly 500 American Indian students attend BSU.

* 10-13% of Americans are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.

* BSU students are approximately 45% male and 55% female.

* BSU students are approximately 60% traditional age (16-24) and 40% over the age of 24.
