Faculty, staff, residence hall advisors, friends and parents
are often in the position to notice signs that a student may need help. Here
are some tips to help you make a referral to the Counseling Center.
- Speak to the individual in private, and let them know you are
interested and willing to listen and to help.
- Present your concerns to the individual in a direct and
specific manner, without telling them what to do, or trying to solve their
problems.
- Tell them about the Counseling Center
and let them know that our services are free, confidential, and that counselors
seek to understand a student's point of view, and to work with them to help
them figure out solutions.
- If a student feels weird or embarrassed about seeking out
help at the counseling center, reassure them that it is a mature choice to face
your problems, and not a sign of weakness or that something is wrong with them.
- If the person is receptive, assist them in making the
appointment at that time. Offer the use of your phone and write down the
appointment information for them.
- If the student is in crisis they may not be able to initiate
getting the help they need. If that is the case, walk them over to the Counseling Center and wait with them until they are
able to see a counselor.
- If a student seems they are in immanent danger of harming
themselves or others, phone 911 or campus security at 755-3888.
- Please remember that counseling is a personal and private
matter and any referral should be handled in a confidential manner.
