Student health insurance is a condition of enrollment at BSU. This condition of enrollment was adopted by the student senate at Bemidji State University in the spring of 2011 for implementation in fall 2011.
In the health care policy adoption, student senate selected a health care policy that allows domestic students to have access to an affordable health insurance plan if they do not have access to other coverage or wish to supplement existing coverage. The plan selected by the student senate is United Healthcare Student Resources. Students will be asked if they have a health care policy when they register for classes. If the response is yes, students will be asked to enter the policy name. If the student response is no, they will be informed that they have the option to be enrolled in the endorsed health care plan adopted by student senate.
All Degree Seeking Undergraduate students taking 6 or more credit hours and all Degree Seeking domestic Graduate students taking 3 or more credit hours are eligible to enroll in the plan for the periods specified as outlined below. You must meet the aforementioned eligibility requirement for the period you are enrolling and each time you make a premium payment. You must actively attend classes for 31 days after the period related to each premium payment. Internet and on-line courses do not meet any of the eligibility requirements.
Annual, Fall, Spring, Spring/Summer, Summer: There is a 30 day enrollment period. Your effective date will be the policy effective date or the date the premium is paid, whichever is later. Your termination date will be the end of the period for which the premium was paid (e.g. Annual, Fall, Spring, etc.). No enrollments will be accepted after the 30 day enrollment period except in the case of “Exceptional Enrollment Situations” as described below.
*Exceptional Enrollment Situations: Enrollment is allowed within a period after the 30 day enrollment period ONLY in a situation where the insured has exhausted ALL insurance options available to them. This includes COBRA, dependent coverage, employer coverage, or any other coverage available. The insured still must meet the eligibility requirements outlines above.
