Courses

Research Course (3 Credits). This course will guide scholars through developing a research proposal including topic formulation, literature review, research design and hypothesis, and proposal writing. The course will emphasize writing and library research skills as key features in research design. The class will help participants nurture their independent and critical thinking, and creative problem solving; develop math skills needed in graduate research; develop skills for team based research and professional networking; develop skills in reading analysis, research writing, and research presentation; promote a cross-fertilization of ideas/techniques between disciplines; and learn to ‘speak the language’ of different academic disciplines.

Conference Preparation (3 Credit). The course will examine the production and dissemination of scholarship, focusing on writing, presenting, and publishing research in printed and electronic formats. Scholars will develop a conference presentation based on their McNair research. The class will guide them through applications to present at discipline-specific conferences, national conferences, the BSU Student Achievement Conference, and for poster sessions (CUR Posters on the Hill, NCUR, and the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science). The McNair Director will develop an in-house publication to disseminate scholars’ research in printed and electronic formats through a portal in the BSU website.  The public may become aware of the range and caliber completed by McNair scholars.
