The American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment addresses global warming by garnering institutional pledges to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions. With higher education’s involvement, the goal is to accelerate research and educational efforts to re-stabilize the earth’s climate. By signing the commitment, presidents agree to eliminate their campuses’ greenhouse gas emissions over time. This involves completing an emissions inventory, setting a two-year target date and milestones for becoming climate neutral; taking immediate short-term action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; integrating sustainability into the curriculum and overall educational experience; and making the action plan, inventory, and progress reports publicly available.

"Working together, we have proven that sustainable development is possible; that reforestation of degraded land is possible; and that exemplary governance is possible when ordinary citizens are informed, sensitized, mobilized and involved in direct action for the environment."
~ Wangari Maathai (Assistant Minister for Natural Resources)
