Dr. Colleen Greer (Coordinator), Ms. Karen Branden, Dr. Debra Peterson
Sociology majors acquire a broad knowledge of how social worlds function. They become equipped as insightful observers of human behavior, and learn to articulate their observations and verify them by gathering and analyzing social data. Many levels of society are examined, such as human interaction with the environment, patterns of structured inequality, and social institutions like the family.
Because the Sociology major is both flexible and compact, it is an ideal choice as a major or as a complement to other majors such as social work, psychology, criminal justice, business administration, mass communication, political science, economics, history, or other majors in the social sciences or humanities (see "Multiple Majors" in this catalog).
See Section II, Enrollment for required high school preparation.
Recommended High School CoursesStudents are encouraged to discuss with their advisor the option of a second major or minor that might strengthen or complement their major.
Transfer Students: At least one-third of the credits to be included in the major must be successfully completed at Bemidji State University.
