Dr. Patrick Donnay (Coordinator), Dr. Mike Garrett
The Bachelor of Arts major prepares students for immediate employment in civil service careers and for study in professional fields such as law, theology, counseling, and planning. This major offers breadth in background and content combined with applied skills development. Suggested minors include Applied Public Policy, Environmental Studies, International Studies, Space Studies, Modern Languages, English, and Business Administration.
The Bachelor of Science, Teacher Licensure major prepares students for a career at the secondary level and requires a passion for both the subject matter and for teaching. Geography, history, and political science form the "matrix" for social studies. Students should complete core courses in these areas first. To increase their employability, students are encouraged to take a second major. Students taking a field of emphasis in a single discipline may not take a minor in the same discipline. Students interested in Social Studies as a major or minor should meet as early as possible with the coordinator.
See Section II, Enrollment for required high school preparation.
Recommended High School CoursesStudents are encouraged to discuss with their advisor the option of a second major or minor that might strengthen or complement their major, e.g., Geography and Political Science.
Transfer Students: At least one-third of the credits to be included in the major must be successfully completed at Bemidji State University.
