Both the Psychology and Applied Psychology majors emphasize psychology as a scientific discipline. All students become directly involved in independent research activities and/or applied human service skills development. Students studying for the Applied Psychology B.S. or the Psychology B.A. or B.S. degree prepare to continue their education at the graduate level or go on to psychology-related employment at the bachelor's degree level. However, students majoring in Psychology receive particular preparation for graduate study and broad preparation for psychology-related employment, while students majoring in Applied Psychology receive skills training for more specialized human service employment. Students studying for teacher licensure prepare to teach in secondary schools.
Advanced degrees are required for the following representative careers: child psychologist, clinical psychologist, college professor, experimental psychologist, industrial psychologist, rehabilitation counselor, school psychologist, and secondary school counselor.

Recommended High School CoursesStudents are encouraged to discuss with their advisor the option of a second major or minor that might strengthen or complement their major.
Transfer Students: At least one-third of the credits to be included in the major must be successfully completed at Bemidji State University.
