Computer Information Systems (CIS) Major, B.S.

The CIS major is interdisciplinary and is offered jointly by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, and the Department of Business Administration. It follows the model curriculum guidelines specified jointly by the Association of Computer Machinery (ACM), Data Processing Management Association (DPMA), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers-Computer Science (EEECS).

I. Required Computer Information Systems Core

• BUAD 109 Business Computing (4 credits)
• BUAD 184 Beginning COBOL Programming (4 credits)
• BUAD 384 Advanced Structured COBOL (4 credits)
• BUAD 386 Systems Analysis and Design (4 credits)
• BUAD 482 Database Management (4 credits)
• BUAD 488 Management Information Systems (4 credits)
• CS 150 Introduction to VAX/VMS (1 credit)
• CS 151 VAX/VMX Advanced Topics (1 credit)
• CS 165 Problem Solving, Programs and Computers (4 credits)
• CS 261, 262 Introduction to Computer Science I, II (8 credits)
• CS 263 Software Development (4 credits)
• Advanced CIS Project: A course whose main focus is an individual or group project that utilizes and integrates CIS concepts and skills examined in previous courses to find solutions to one or more real-world information systems problems. This requirement may be met by satisfactorily completing one course from the numbered options outlined below:

1. BUAD 484 Applied Software Development Project

2. An approved internship (BUAD 497 or CS 497)

3. An approved experimental course (numbered 493)

4. An approved directed independent study course (numbered 491)

For options 2 through 4, prior approval of the specific course by the CIS Program Coordinating Committee is required.

Note: If a student's high school mathematics courses and/or the Mathematics Placement Test indicate a lack of readiness for calculus, the student will be encouraged to complete one or more preparatory courses in mathematics.
