Computer Science Major, B.S.

Students cannot take 400-level computer science courses until they have successfully completed one year of calculus (MATH 241, 242, 243, or equivalent) and they have achieved a minimum grade point average of 2.25 in the required computer science courses they have completed.

I. Transfer students must take a minimum of 15 quarter hours in the major at Bemidji State University.

II. Required Computer Science Courses

• CS 150 Introduction to VAX/VMS (1 credit)
• CS 151 VAX/VMS Advanced Topics (1 credit)
• CS 165 Problem Solving, Programs, and Computers (4 credits)
• CS 261, 262 Introduction to Computer Science I, II (8 credits)
• CS 263 Software Development (4 credits)
• CS 273 Computer Organization and Assembly Language (4 credits)
• CS 350 Data Structures I (4 credits)
• CS 410 Operating Systems I (4 credits)
• CS 428 Programming Language Structures (4 credits)
• CS 455 Software Engineering (4 credits)

Subtotal: 38 credits

III. Required Courses in Related Areas

• *MATH 241, 242, 243 Calculus I, II, III (15 credits)
• MATH 326 Discrete Mathematics (4 credits)
• MATH 332 Linear Algebra
  or MATH 361 Probability Theory (4 credits)

Subtotal: 23 credits

*If the student's high school mathematics courses and/or the Mathematics Placement Test indicate a lack of readiness for Calculus, the student will be placed in one of the following pre-calculus sequences: MATH 145 and 146, or MATH 141, 142. Students beginning their math courses with MATH 112 should consult with their academic adviser prior to completing MATH 112 for information on the next course to be taken.

IV. Required Electives

• Select according to the restrictions listed below a minimum of 23 quarter hours:
  • Restriction 1
    • Complete 16 quarter hours from Computer Science courses at the 300 - or 400 -level or from MATH 371, 372. No more than 4 quarter hours may be internship.
  • Restriction 2
    • Complete at least two of the following courses: MATH 245, 320, 332, 333, 338,361, 362, 425, 434, 435, 475; PHYS 357, 358.

Subtotal: 23 credits

TOTAL QUARTER HOURS REQUIRED FOR MAJOR: 84 CREDITS

Although the following courses will not apply to major requirements, they cover material and applications that the Department feels would greatly benefit computer science majors and are highly recommended: BUAD 184 and 286, IT 343, and ENGL 227.
