Computer Science Minor, B.S.

The Bachelor of Science minor in Computer Science is designed to provide students with the opportunity to obtain a background in computer science which will strengthen the major area of study and enhance employability in their chosen field.

I. Transfer students must take a minimum of 6 quarter hours in the minor at Bemidji State University.

II. Required Courses (Core Requirements in Computer Science)

• CS 150 Introduction to VAX/VMS (1 credit)
• CS 151 VAX/VMS Advanced Topics (1 credit)
• CS 165 Problem Solving, Programs, and Computers (4 credits)
• CS 261, 262 Introduction to Computer Science I, II (8 credits)
• CS 263 Software Development (4 credits)

Subtotal: 18 credits

III. Choice of Required Emphasis A or B

A: Teaching Field of Emphasis (Emphasis A Core)

For teaching majors only. There is no licensure based on minor preparation in Computer Science.

  • CS 303 Microcomputer Systems (4 credits)
  • CS 344 Educational Applications of Computers (4 credits)

    Subtotal: 8 credits

• Required Electives
  • Complete at least 8 credits from CS courses at the 300 - or 400 - level. The remaining 4 credits must come from the following courses:
    • MATH 245, 320, 326, 332, 333, 338, 361, 362, 371, 372, 425, 434, 435, 475.
    • PHYS 250, 357, 358.

Subtotal: 12 credits

TOTAL QUARTER HOURS REQUIRED FOR MINOR, EMPHASIS A: 38 CREDITS

B: Non-Teaching Field of Emphasis

• Required Courses (Emphasis B Core)
  • CS 273 Computer Organization and Assembly Language (4 credits)
  • MATH 211 Concepts of Calculus I
    or MATH 241 Calculus I (4-5 credits)

    Subtotal: 8-9 credits

• Required Electives
  • Complete at least 8 credits from CS courses at the 300 - or 400 - level. The remaining 3 or 4 credits must come from the following courses:
    • MATH 245, 320, 326, 332, 333, 338, 361, 362, 371, 372, 425, 434, 435, 475.
    • PHYS 250, 357, 358.

Subtotal: 11-12 credits
