Field of Emphasis in Writing

This field of emphasis is offered for both English and non-English majors. Students may choose to focus on creative writing, business and technical writing, mass media writing or science-related writing. Beginning with a core group of required writing courses, students may choose from a wide variety of elective writing courses that best meet career needs.

I. Required Courses

Subtotal: 12 credits

II. Elective Specialization.

Students must select 12 additional quarter hours:
A. For specialization in creative writing
  • ENGL 218 Introductory Fiction Writing (4 credits)
  • ENGL 219 Introductory Poetry Writing (4 credits)
  • ENGL 221 Scriptwriting (4 credits)
  • ENGL 318 Intermediate Fiction Writing (4 credits)
  • ENGL 319 Intermediate Poetry Writing (4 credits)
  • ENGL 321 Advanced Scriptwriting (4 credits)
  • ENGL 418 Advanced Fiction Writing (4 credits)
  • ENGL 419 Advanced Poetry Writing (4 credits)
  • Creative writing students may select one or more of the following courses as electives: ENGL 181, 182, 183, 184, 185, 281, or 380.
B. For specialization in business and related fields
  • ENGL 227 Technical Writing (4 credits)
C. For specialization in scientific fields
  • BIOL 310 The Literature of Biology (3 credits)
  • ENGL 227 Technical Writing (4 credits)
D. For specialization in mass media fields

Subtotal Specialization: 12 credits
