Mathematics Minor, B.S. and B.A.

The Mathematics Minor can be used as a minor by students obtaining either a Bachelor of Science degree or a Bachelor of Arts degree. A choice of two emphases is available. The scientific emphasis is primarily for students majoring in the physical sciences while the applied technical emphasis is primarily designed for students majoring in biology, business, industrial technology or the behavioral and life sciences.

I.Transfer students must take a minimum of 6 quarter hours in the minor at Bemidji State University.

A.Scientific Field of Emphasis

• Required Courses
  • *MATH 241, 242, 243 Calculus I, II, III (15 credits)
  • MATH 320 Foundations of Mathematics (4 credits)

Subtotal: 19 credit

• Electives
  • Select 11 quarter hours from: MATH 244, 245, or any Math course numbered 326 or above.

TOTAL QUARTER HOURS REQUIRED FOR SCIENTIFIC EMPHASIS: 30 CREDITS

B. Applied Technical Emphasis

1. Suggested for majors in: business, industrial technology, or any of the behavioral or life sciences (including biology) and similar disciplines. *NOTE: The Applied Technical Emphasis is not available or majors in Chemistry or Computer Science, nor for majors or minors in Physics.

• Required Courses
  • *MATH 211, 212 Concepts of Calculus I, II
    or MATH 241, 242 Calculus I, II (8-10 credits)
  • *MATH 260 Applied Statistics I (4 credits)

    (Students whose major program requires a comparable statistics course may substitute that course for MATH 260 with consent of the Mathematics department).

  • Complete one course from CS 220 through 229 or CS 261 (4 credits)

  Subtotal: 16-18 credits

• Required Electives
  • Complete a minimum of 12 quarter hours, at least 4 of which are in mathematics from: MATH 213, 243, 244, 275, 320, 326, 327, 332, 333, 338, 361, 362, 370, 376; CS 221 or above (except CS 322, 344); one of BUAD 280 or ECON 403.

   TOTAL QUARTER HOURS REQUIRED FOR EMPHASIS B: 28-30 CREDITS

   *If the student's high school mathematics courses and/or the Mathematics Placement Test indicate a lack of readiness for calculus, the student will be placed in one of the following pre-calculus sequences: MATH 145 and 146 or MATH 141 and 142 or MATH 112, 113, 114, and 141.
