Public School Coaching Licensure for Interscholastic Sports

The State of Minnesota requires teaching licensure in addition to Coaching Certification. However, licensure is not required in most states, and in those states is not a prerequisite for coaching certification.

A minimum of 10 quarter hours must be taken at Bemidji State University.

Students are also urged to select BIOL 111, 112, and 113 in the Liberal Education curriculum since these are prerequisites of BIOL 203 or 204, which are prerequisites to PHED 261 Athletic Training.

I.Required Theory Courses

• PHED 260 Sport Physiology (3 credits)
• PHED 261 Athletic Training (3 credits)
• PHED 312 Psychology of Sport (3 credits)

Subtotal: 9 credits

II. Required Elective Courses

• Select two of the following coaching courses:
  • PHED 361 Baseball Coaching (3 credits)
  • PHED 362 Basketball Coaching (3 credits)
  • PHED 363 Football Coaching (3 credits)
  • PHED 364 Ice Hockey Coaching (3 credits)
  • PHED 365 Swimming Coaching (3 credits)
  • PHED 366 Track and Field Coaching (3 credits)
  • PHED 367 Wrestling Coaching (3 credits)
  • PHED 369 Volleyball Coaching (3 credits)
  • PHED 370 Golf Coaching (3 credits)
  • PHED 371 Tennis Coaching (3 credits)

III. Required Practicum in Coaching

• PHED 450 Practicum in Athletic Coaching (2 credits)
