Early Childhood Licensure Extensions

Study in Early Childhood Education can result in licensure extensions and a Kindergarten Endorsement as well as a field of emphasis within the Elementary Education Major, B.S. (Teacher Licensure) and the Applied Psychology Major, B.S. See the Graduate Catalog for information on Early Childhood Family Education Licensure. The Preprofessional Skills Test must be completed before enrolling in Early Childhood Education Classes.

Comprehensive Early Childhood Licensure

This licensure extension is a 38 quarter hour program for elementary education majors that results in pre-kindergarten licensure and the kindergarten endorsement. With careful planning, the comprehensive early childhood licensure can often be completed within the 192 quarter hour degree program.

I.Required Courses

  • ED 366 Foundations of Kindergarten and Early Childhood Education (4 credits)
  • ED 367 Relations and Management in Early Childhood Education (4 credits)
  • ED 376 Communications in Early Childhood Education (3 credits)
  • ED 381 Teaching Young Children with Special Needs (3 credits)
  • SOWK 301 Parent-Child Relations in Contemporary Family Forms (4 credits)
    •

    Subtotal: 18 credits

    II. Directed Alternative Curriculum Courses - 3 credits minimum

    Select either:
    • ED 468 Child Development and Early Childhood Education (3 credits)

    Or the two following:

    • ED 345 Motor Activities for Early Childhood (2 credits)
    • MUS 348 Music Methods and Materials: Pre-K through Second Grade (3 credits)

    Subtotal: 3-5 credits

    III. Directed Alternative Psychology and Family Courses - 5 credits minimum

    Select at least one child psychology course and one family course from the following:
    • PSY 340 Child and Adolescent Psychology (4 credits)
    • PSY 344 Typical and Atypical Development of the Preschool Child (3 credits)
    • SOC 322 The Sociology of Marriage and Family (4 credits)
    • ED 305 Parent-Teacher Team in Special Early Childhood Situations (3 credits)
    • ED 332 Parent-Teacher Relations (3 credits)
    • ED 386 Young Child and the Family (2 credits)

    Subtotal: 5-8 credits

    IV.Required Student Teaching

  • ED 424 Elective Student Teaching: Kindergarten (8 credits)
  • ED 488 Pre-kindergarten Student Teaching (4 credits)

    TOTAL QUARTER HOURS FOR LICENSURE: 38-43 CREDITS

     

    Prekindergarten Teacher Licensure

    The prekindergarten licensure extension is a 30 quarter hour program for education majors and a 37 quarter hour program for majors in other programs.

    I.Required Courses

  • ED 366 Foundations of Kindergarten and Early Childhood Education (4 credits)
  • ED 367 Relations and Management in Early Childhood Education (4 credits)
  • ED 376 Communications in Early Childhood Education (3 credits)
  • ED 381 Teaching Young Children with Special Needs (3 credits)
  • SOWK 301 Parent-Child Relations in Contemporary Family Forms (4 credits)

    Subtotal: 18 credits

    Prekindergarten Associate Licensure

    This licensure requires a minimum of 22 quarter hours of licensure course work as part of a 90 quarter hour non-degree program.
