The fields of emphasis encourage elementary education majors to gain depth in understanding, to increase instructional capabilities, and to establish a base or further specialization on the graduate level should they desire such specialization. Fields of emphasis specially designed for the elementary school teacher must be chosen from the listing below. Students should consider their strengths and interests when choosing a field of emphasis.

The special education field of emphasis offers three options for students. Option 1 should be selected by students interested in developing a broad foundation regarding the different exceptionalities that may be mainstreamed in their elementary classes. Option 2 is for students who plan on obtaining licensure in a specific area of special education after completion of their elementary degree. The second option does not in itself qualify the student for special education licensure. For complete information on the licensure programs in LD, EBD, and MMH, refer to the BSU graduate catalog or contact the coordinator for Special Education. Option 3 is for students who plan to pursue licensure in the area of hearing impairment at the graduate level.
