Liberal Education Background Requirements

Degree Requirements

Students must complete the Preprofessional Skills Test before enrolling in Education classes.

Students considering a career program in elementary school education must enroll in ED 310, Foundations of Public School Education. They may enroll after completion of 45 quarter hours of college credit (or the first quarter on campus in the case of a junior or senior status transfer student) as it is during this course that the remainder of the student's schedule is planned. Except in certain cases, ED 300, Introduction to Education is to be taken concurrently with ED 310. Admission to the teacher education program is gained through successful completion of ED 300 and ED 310 requirements, along with the fulfillment of all other Departmental requirements. The Elementary Education Major consists of required courses in Education and related areas and a required field of emphasis. The program may include a second field of emphasis or elective options.

TO BE ADMITTED INTO THE ELEMENTARY EDUCATION PROGRAM A STUDENT IS REQUIRED TO HAVE AN OVERALL GPA OF 2.50 AND IS REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN A GPA OF 2.50 OVERALL TO REMAIN IN APPROVED STATUS.

The actual number of quarter hours required for completion of this program may vary with specific options. Please consult with your adviser and the Department Chair.

IV. Elective Option(s) to complete 192 quarter hour requirement for B.S. degree

After consultation with the adviser, students will select one or more of the following to complete graduation requirements:

1. A second field of emphasis. Selection will be made from those listed below.
2. Core course option. Groups of courses may be selected from fields of emphasis and/or other programs listed in this catalog. The core course option allows the student to have a coordinated program of study in an area without completing an entire field of emphasis. Typically, core course clusters will be from 9 to 18 quarter hours.
3. Licensure or prelicensure extension. Students may select courses beyond a completed field of emphasis that lead to undergraduate licensures (e.g., coaching, middle school, kindergarten) or to partial completion of fifth-year licensures (e.g., learning disabilities) which may later be completed at the graduate level.
4. Any course or courses. Elective courses are to be selected by the student with the guidance of an adviser.

   *NOTE: With careful planning the student can complete most undergraduate licensure programs or a second field of emphasis within the 192 quarter hours; however, it is possible that the 192 quarter hour total may be exceeded.

Elementary Education, B.S. (Grades 1-6 Teacher Licensure)

Liberal Education Background

The curriculum of the modern elementary school is concerned largely with the development of basic skills in reading, writing, mathematics, the arts, sciences, social studies, physical education, and health. Students preparing to teach in the elementary school should choose their Liberal Education courses carefully to enhance their core of information in each area of knowledge. Students should note that some courses listed in the Liberal Education curriculum are prerequisites for courses to be taken later in the Elementary Education program.

Students should plan to complete all Liberal Education requirements during their first two years in college. In planning this course work students, including transfer student with or without A.A. degrees, must complete the following:

Area II: Humanities

To comply with licensure and program requirements students must complete the following in Area II:

• The equivalent of MATH 112, Beginning College Algebra, or higher
• MUS 111 Music Principles
• One course each from two of the following sub-areas: Literature, Philosophy, Theatre/Speech, and Visual Arts
• One additional course from any of the Humanities sub-areas

Area III: Liberal Education Activities

To comply with licensure and program requirements students must complete the following in Area III:

• A minimum of one of the following:
  • THSP 109 Interpersonal Communication
  • THSP 110 Basics of Speech Communication
  • THSP 220 Oral Interpretation
• A minimum of 2 quarter hours in Physical Education
