Middle School Licensure

The Middle School Licensure program is available to majors in either elementary or secondary education. Program requirements may be met through the satisfactory completion of a minimum of 24 quarter hours of credit or the equivalent. This is to be accomplished through the completion of the required courses in each of the areas listed. It is very important that all course selections be made only after consulting with an adviser.

Elementary Background

Program for Persons with Licensure in the Elementary School or Persons Completing an Elementary Teacher Education Program.

I.Required Courses

• ED 323 Philosophy and Organization of the Middle School (3 credits)
• ED 371 The Study of the Exceptional Learner
  or ED 385 Mainstreaming the Exceptional Learner (3 credits)
• ED 428 Student Teaching-Secondary (8 credits)
• PSY 240 Child and Adolescent Psychology (4 credits)

Subtotal: 18 credits

Decisions relative to the arrangements for the supervised student teaching experience will be made by the Director of Clinical Experiences. The Bemidji State University supervisor will be responsible for the final evaluation of the student teaching experience.

II.Required Subject Matter Specialization

A minimum of 12 quarter hours of credit in a single academic licensure field is required. The selection of these courses should be made with, and must be approved by, the coordinator of the Middle Level Licensure Program. Licensure is available in: English/ Language Arts, French, German, Health, Mathematics, Science (Life, Earth or Physical), Secondary Developmental Reading, Social Studies, Spanish, or Theatre/Speech.

Subtotal: 12 credits

Total Quarter Hours Required for Program: 26 credits

*NOTE: A maximum of 12 quarter hours of academic work completed at other colleges or universities may be applied to the program. Transfer credit must have been earned at an accredited institution, must be approved by the person responsible for the middle school program, and must be recorded on the appropriate forms. Two official transcripts must be sent directly to the Records Office by the institution awarding the credit.

Secondary Background

Program for Persons with Licensure in Secondary Education or Persons Completing a Secondary Teacher Education Program.

• ED 346 Developmental Reading in the Elementary Grades (4 credits)
  or ED 371 The Study of The Exceptional Learner
  or ED 385 Mainstreaming the Exceptional Learner (3 credits)
• ED 416 Diagnostic and Remedial Instruction in Reading (4 credits)
• ED 427 Student Teaching-Elementary (0-4 credits)
• ED 446 Developmental Reading In Secondary School Teaching (3 credits)
• PSY 340 Child and Adolescent Psychology (4 credits)

Total Quarter Hours For Required Courses: 21-25 credits
