Secondary School Licensure

Students must complete the Preprofessional Skills Test before enrolling in Education classes.

Admission to secondary teacher education takes place while the student is concurrently enrolled in ED 300 Introduction to Education and in ED 310 Foundations of Public School Education. The student applies for admittance by the following: *completing Form TE-1 declaring a major preference and requesting a student teaching quarter *completing a professional planning paper *completing the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) *completing Form TE-3 in consultation with an adviser in the major field *filing a letter of reference from an instructor. Students wishing to pursue a secondary education major must complete, or have completed, a liberal education mathematics course the equivalent of MATH 112 Beginning College Algebra, or higher. The requirement also pertains to transfer student with or without A.A. degrees.

A student admitted into and retained in the secondary teacher education, program is required to complete the courses listed in the groups below. Students must have a minimum 2.50 average GPA to be admitted into the major and maintain a 2.50 GPA in education courses and overall to remain in approved status. The handbook contains information about such matters as the sequence of courses, selecting an individual program, and student teaching. It is required reading for secondary education majors.

Professional Education Core for Licensure at the Secondary Level

I.Required Courses (Foundation Courses)

ED 300 Introduction to Education (1 credit)

ED 310 Foundations of Public School Education (3 credits)
*Concurrent enrollment in ED 300 is required
*PSY 201 General Psychology I must be taken prior to or concurrently with ED 310

ED 321 Human Relations in Education (3 credits)

ED 325 Psychological Foundations for Teaching (4 credits)

PSY 201 General Psychology I (3 credits)

II. Required Courses

Instruction in methods of teaching shall be in the licensure field(s) and at the licensure level(s) for which persons are to be recommended for teacher licensure. A K-12 license requires both elementary methods and secondary methods.

ED 419 Orientation to Student Teaching (2 credits)

Methods course in subject area* (2-5 credits)

*Each program offering a secondary level licensure requires at least one Professional Education methods course (2-5 quarter hours) in that subject area. These courses are usually, but not always, listed within the major or minor program. Please contact your major or minor adviser to be sure you have completed this requirement.

III. Required Practica

A minimum of two required practica occur as a part of coursework before student teaching. The prerequisite for student teaching is completion of Foundation Courses and Methods Courses listed above, at least sixty-five percent of major/minor course work completed, and major/minor departmental approval. Student teaching experience(s) shall be in the licensure field(s) and at the licensure level(s) for which persons are to be recommended for teacher licensure. A K-12 license requires student teaching at both the elementary and secondary levels.

V. Subject Major and/or Minor
