Vocational Education Major, B.S.

I.Required Courses (27 Credits)

• IT 467 Vocational Tests and Measurements (3 credits)
• IT 468 Course Construction in Vocational Education (3 credits)
• IT 469 Philosophy of Vocational Education (3 credits)
• IT 478 Methods of Teaching Vocational Education (3 credits)
• IT 485 Internship (6-8 credits)
• Electives in IT education or Professional Education selected with consultation with adviser (9 credits)

II.Required Career Proficiency (usually completed during second year)

Current State of Minnesota licensure requirements include trade experience that varies in length and type from one program to another. Advisers in the Vocational Education program will assist students in obtaining trade experience approval from the appropriate state office. The following types of experience may be awarded quarter hours of credit that will count toward degree requirements up to the maximum quarter hours indicated.

1. Two years of successful, verified post high school trade or technical training in an approved private, public, military trade, or technical school up to 45 quarter hours.
2. Three years of work experience in a trade of occupation. (Documentation by verification forms and approved by the Board of Teaching or Technical College Board as applicable toward licensure) up to 45 quarter hours.
3. Combination of A and B up to 90 quarter hours.
4. Individual evaluation of successful teaching experience in a vocational program.1-16 qtr. hrs.

   Four years or more: 16 qtr. hrs.

   Three years: 12 qtr. hrs.

   Two years: 8 qtr. hrs.

   One year: 4 qtr. hrs.

III. Suggested Elective Courses (usually taken during final two years)

Courses are identified by the State Department of Education, Division of Vocational Technical Education, as applicable toward vocational-technical teacher licensure. Other courses may be accepted. Select courses as needed for licensure in consultation with your adviser.

Vocational Licensure

Because courses vary according to licensure chosen and because of licensure requirement changes, students should contact the Director of Vocational Education for current information. The teacher training institution (BSU) does not license the vocational teacher. The Board of Teaching approves licensure for secondary vocational education and the Technical College Board approves postsecondary and adult vocational licensure. For the purposes of the baccalaureate degree a minimum of 45 quarter hours of credits must be taken in residence. Any courses taught on extension at an area technical college at an approved vocational center or through the External Learning Center of Bemidji State University will be considered as courses in residence.
