Chemistry Areas of Study


Chemistry Major, B.S.

This program is designed for students who plan a professional career in chemistry, in a related science or a professional area such as medicine, dentistry, etc. It will prepare the student for graduate study in the sciences.

An internship in a field of chemistry or related field is strongly advised. The participation in an internship enhances greatly the placement of graduates. Internships are normally taken during the summer between the junior and senior years but some internships also include time during the academic year. These internships for the most part are paid positions.

Note: Students enrolled in CHEM 1111 who elect this major should enroll in CHEM 1212 during the second semester. Students completing the CHEM 1111, CHEM 1112 sequence before making the decision to major in Chemistry should take CHEM 1113 before enrolling in CHEM 2510.

Chemistry Major, B.A.

This program is designed for students who intend to pursue further professional studies, or who seek employment in areas where knowledge of chemistry would be advantageous. Specific required courses are held to a minimum to allow the student considerable flexibility in designing a program of study. The student should also select a minor or a major in another area.

Physical Science (Chemistry/Physics) Major, B.S. (Teacher Licensure)

This major is designed for secondary teaching in physics and chemistry (Minnesota only). It is a combined Physics and Chemistry curriculum and is crosslisted under Physics. Professional education courses are also required. See Professional Education in this catalog for Teacher Licensure entry requirements and degree completion requirements. Students who wish to teach in another state should consult a Physics or Chemistry advisor very early, since the requirements for that state may differ substantially from those presented here.

With proper student planning and in consultation with the academic advisor a student may complete his or her academic degree in 128 semester credits. It is possible, in some circumstances, that courses in a student's Liberal Education program may be used in his or her academic major.

Alert: New State of Minnesota teacher licensure rules may go into effect Fall 1998. Before registering for classes, please consult the revised Handbook for Teacher Education Students, available in the office of the Department of Education.

Biochemistry Emphasis, Chemistry Major, B.S. or B.A.

The biochemistry emphasis is designed to enrich a student's B.S. or B.A. Chemistry Major. It is not a major in itself.
